RESEARCH ABSTRACT
Most people in rural and semi-rural areas afflicted with ocular disease (OD) were diagnosed late due to the lack of ophthalmologists and costly and immobile equipment. Mobile applications are the current niche in healthcare, even for screening or analysis of OD. To make the best of the situation, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things (IoT) have shown potency as they represent an ideal solution to the limited medical attention people receive in developing countries. IoT can help ophthalmologists in regular patient monitoring and remote diagnosis by connecting anyone to anything at any time and place with any service and network. Thus, this project proposes a beta-prototype of myMata© that can help solve the shortage of ophthalmologists in remote/rural areas and provide a faster and more affordable alternative to treat pterygium and cataracts using anterior segment photographed images.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
  1. To improve, enhance and upscale the Alpha-prototype of myMata©
  2. To undertake soft market introduction
  3. To verify and evaluate the performance of the enhanced myMata prototype
  4. To test the screening performance of ocular diseases namely pterygium of the enhanced myMata prototype (B-prototype)

RESEARCH IMPACT
Government :
  • In particular, driving industries related to Optometry, in line with the government's desire to make the country a hub for Health Tourism.
  • Potentially used as an alternative method of eye disease screening in rural clinics and mobile eye clinic services under the Ministry of Health Malaysia.
Academia :
  • Improve understanding of eye diseases by participating in an exhibition to introduce myMata. Therefore, researchers and academics know the importance of research and innovation development in this field.
  • Expanding the scope of research related to eye disease detection by integrating cataract eye disease in an integrated system.
Industry :
  • It has the potential to be commercialized as a screening method for eye diseases in areas where there is a need for ophthalmologists or optometrists.
Community :
  • Help improve the community's quality of life (QoL) myMata has been involved in exhibitions and community programs with the community to introduce myMata and its use, providing services to check eye health status, especially during the COVID pandemic.
