RESEARCH ABSTRACT
In recent years, increased global demands on marine shrimp production from the aquaculture industry are the result of changes in consumer tastes and seafood preferences. However, most shrimp farming industries are unable to meet the global demand due to disease outbreaks such as Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS), White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) and Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP). In line with Research Priority Roadmap 2017 as the Year of Translational Research announced by The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Malaysia, environmental problems and economical limitations faced by marine shrimp industry could be solved by implementing sustainable green farming known as Rapid Biofloc Technology (Rapid BFT). Under the National Key Economic Area (NKEA) supported by the Government of Malaysia, the aquaculture industry was expanded further with the creation of the Aquaculture Industrial Zone for High Impact Project. In order to ensure the development of this program with social equity, positive efforts need to be implemented to quantify the pollution and manage the wastewater. Therefore, a strategic framework is proposed to develop the Rapid BFT prototype which offers an alternative way for maintaining water quality and reducing the impact of shrimp mortality. Thus, the main outcome of this project is to establish a prototype of Rapid BFT for marine shrimp aquaculture industry to be sustained and further meets the minimum requirement for Malaysian water authority such as The Department of Environment (DOE) and The Department of Fisheries (DOF) to make informed decisions for the efficient management of any other aquaculture productions.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
  1. To develop a Rapid BFT prototype as a new green technology for improvement of water quality and marine shrimp survival of at least 80% survival rate.
  2. To establish the development of Rapid BFT for sustainable production of marine shrimp with a minimum of 10 metric tonnes per hectare.
  3. To extend the effectiveness of Rapid BFT application towards shrimp survival and growth performance through Transfer of Technology (ToT) programme to at least 2 multinational commercial marine shrimp farms in Malaysia.
