RESEARCH ABSTRACT
Bacterial sepsis is one of the leading causes of death in Malaysia, with a prevalence of 35% in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Center. Currently, bacterial sepsis is detected via bacterial cultures or the ELISA method. However, these methods require more than 24 hours to produce results. The secretory group IIA Phospholipase A2 (sPLA2- IIA) was found to have high sensitivity and specificity for bacterial infection diagnosis (~90%). This biomarker was successfully determined by our newly-developed electrochemical biosensor (based on first-of-its-kind enzymatic cascading reactions of three enzymes immobilised on acrylic-microspheres coated onto a screen-printed electrode). We had made this point-of-care testing (POCT) biosensor more user-friendly and small size. The POCT to achieve clinical diagnosis for on-site bacterial infection diagnosis in 15 minute. It enables risk stratification in early phase of bacterial sepsis to improve patient outcome.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
  1. To miniaturize a user-friendly alpha prototype device consisting of integrated electrode and portable handheld electronic reader for rapid detection of bacterial sepsis.
  2. To test the performance of the newly-fabricated alpha prototype
