RESEARCH ABSTRACT
This research proposes the development of a prototype mobile application, embedded with a Sign Language Video, for use by HI students learning Science. Since research relating to assistive technology has been growing, the emergence of mobile applications should be a step forward in helping students with disabilities to access education flexibly (anywhere, anytime). For that purpose, video technology will be used to meet the culture of HI students and, at the same time, preserve sign language. The quality of the natural signing representations and the accuracy of the video captions will be taken into account in the development of the prototype, to avoid the generation of nonsensical meanings. This research also supports the STEM Initiative in the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
  1. To develop sign language videos to assist hearing impaired students in learning Science.
  2. To develop a prototype mobile application embedded with a sign language video to assist hearing.
  3. To implement and evaluate the effectiveness of the mobile applications in improving HI students’ problem solving skills, motivation in learning, performance and knowledge construction in learning Science.

RESEARCH IMPACT
MySL has been tested on HI students in the special education school. Findings have proved that MySL has the potential to provide the needs of HI students in learning Science subjects and as a result, their academic performance has been improved.
