RESEARCH DURATION
3 years (01 December 2016 – 30 November 2019)
RESEARCH ABSTRACT
The specific objectives of this research are to: 1) investigate the foraging behaviour and colony development; 2) enhance flowering on selected food plant resources of stingless bee; 3) characterize the antimicrobial properties of stingless bee. The first experiment will be focusing on the performance of stingless bee during dry and rainy seasons based on their foraging behaviour and also to observe the development of the colony in one year. The second experiment will be on the flower enhancement study where selected plants will be given a plant growth regulator (paclobutrazol) for high flower production. Number of flowers, size of flowers, nutritional composition from bee collected pollen and stored pollen will be measured at the harvest stage. The third experiment is to characterize the antimicrobial attributes through gene expression analyses of the antimicrobial peptide in all stages of the bee’s life cycle. It is expected that the project will provide a comprehensive basic knowledge on stingless bee colony that will be used as a guideline to a better management of stingless bee colony.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
  1. To investigate the biological and environmental factors that contribute to healthy stingless bee colony.
  2. To investigate nutraceutical properties and probiotic potential of stingless bee honey and propolis for establishment of quality markers on anti-aging process.
  3. To evaluate processing and characterization of stingless bee honey for longer shelf life.
  4. To assess the financial and economic performance of traditional and modern technology stingless bee production.

  4. 15 courses of Stingless beekeeping course has been conducted and 105 participants were trained including academician, farmers, research student.
